Revised after only a few months of performing due to Gaga's concern of the original version being constructed within a very short span of time, the original 2009 version had a stage alike a frame with forced perspectives with everything fitted within it: comparable to that of a hollowed-out television set. Since The Fame Monster dealt with the paranoias Gaga had faced, the main theme of the show became human evolution with Gaga portraying her personal growth as the show progressed while elements of the cancelled tour with Kanye West still remained in some parts. From 2010 and onwards, the revamped shows had a New York theme and portrayed a story set in New York where Gaga and her friends got lost and had to find their way to "the Monster Ball". Both versions of the show were divided into five segments with the last being the encore. Each segment featured Gaga in a new outfit singing songs related to the named segment and was followed by a video interlude.

Contemporary critics praised the show; commending Gaga's singing abilities and sense of style and fashion. They were also impressed by the pompousness and the theatricality of the show, comparing it to the tours of artists like Madonna. At the 2010 Billboard Touring Awards, Gaga won the Breakthrough Performer Award, as well as the Concert Marketing & Promotion Award, the latter being an acknowledgment of her partnership with sponsor Virgin Mobile. The tour became the highest grossing tour by a debut headlining artist and one of the highest grossing tours of all time.

When practicing your guitar, it's important to set goals. You want to set goals so that you can check your progress and your results and that you are analyzing how well you are doing with your guitar playing.

Goal setting is something that is very important to the development of your skills as a guitarist. When setting goals, you will want to start small at first. Set a goal to learn a few new cords first, and then start practicing to your favorite tunes. Next you will want to learn how to master entire songs all within a 20-30 minute span. You don't want to overload yourself on practice time so a 20-30 minute span is sufficient.

Setting goals such as these will allow you to attain the guitar mastery that you are looking for. By writing out your goals, you will be able to track your guitar playing success, and it will most likely come true.

If this sounds obvious to you, then you should know that it is. And because it's so obvious, you should do your best to follow what you write out so that you can attain the guitar playing success that you're looking for.

If you set a goal saying that you want to learn the harmonics, then write it out and set out a course of action to practice playing the harmonics. This will let you know how much you've progressed and what else you need to do in order to play the harmonics better.

Here are more great tips for setting goals when it comes to playing the guitar:

1) Set short and long-term goals

Your short term goals can be something such as learning a new cord while your long-term goals could be to master playing new songs. You won't reach your long-term goals before your short term ones, so it's important that you set both. If you're truly serious about becoming great with guitar playing, then you will need to set both short term and long-term goals.

2) Read your goals everyday

When you read your goals everyday, you remind yourself of the reasons you're practicing for. If one of your long-term goals is to play in nightclubs in your city, then everyday that you practice you should envision yourself playing in a nightclub and achieving success. But you won't reach this goal until all of your short term ones are reached first, so be sure to keep this in mind.

3) Check off your goals as you complete them

After each practice session or each week, check off a short term goal that you completed. This will help you to track your program and will help you to feel more successful and confident about your guitar playing. Soon enough after you check off all your short term goals, your long-term goals will be accomplished and you will be the awesome guitar player that you always dreamed of.

Amy Winehouse's Death
At 3:54 pm on 23 July 2011, two ambulances were called to Winehouse's home in Camden, London. Shortly afterwards, the Metropolitan Police confirmed that she had died. As of 24 July, the investigation to determine the cause of death, which is described by police as unexplained, is still ongoing. After her death was announced, media and camera crews appeared as crowds gathered near Winehouse’s residence to pay their respects. Forensic investigators entered the flat as police cordoned off the street outside.

Winehouse's record label, Universal Republic, released a statement that read in part: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer."

Winehouse's death made her the latest musician to join the 27 Club, a group of musicians who died at the age of 27.

There are different types of guitars. You will often notice this when bands are playing. Have you ever tried playing a bass guitar? If you don’t know how to play one, then you can start to learn bass guitar playing.

Did you know that bass guitar playing is very easy? It is among the simplest musical instruments that even children can learn to play in a short time. Beginners are advised to learn the different notes one by one. This way, you will avoid being confused and some possible problems.

If this is your first time to play a bass guitar and you haven’t played any other instrument, make sure that you use the fretted guitar. This will make it easier for you to learn the notes and how to play them.

On the onset of your learning to play a bass guitar, you will not need the instrument. You will first have to concentrate on finger exercises. It doesn’t really matter which hand you use. The guitar instrument can be played both by right handed and left handed individuals. Try to relax your fingers. Later on, lift your left or right hand making a ninety degrees angle with the floor. Lift your fingers one by one and make sure that you this in rapid succession.

After conducting the finger exercises, you can now use the bass guitar. Place the guitar on your thigh with the strings opposite your body. Most bass guitars have a sloped body but if yours is different, you can use your forearm to adjust the guitar’s position.

The neck of the guitar should be supported by your left or right hand. Place your thumb on the E string. This string is located midway of all the strings on the guitar. Your index and middle finger should be on string D. This is found two strings down the E. try to pluck each string in succession. Don’t expect to get this lesson right away. It may take awhile before you can master it. If you’re patient, you learn this much faster.

How are you going to learn these things? You can have several options. You can buy a DVD program that focuses mainly on bass guitar playing. Aside from that, you can also sign up for guitar lessons but this is a bit expensive. If you want to learn playing bass guitar inexpensively or even for free, start surfing the net and find some information regarding the guitar playing.

If you’re really into bass guitars, it would be best learn at an early age. So if you have kids who are interested in the said guitars, give them lessons right away. However, it’s never too old to learn. If you want to give it a shot, you may do so. Just make sure that you are motivated enough, confident, and patient. You should also devote enough time to it so that you can master the lessons.

Playing guitar together with other people is a very fun activity. It can help you relax and you can meet a lot of people. If you know how to play the guitar, you can perform songs and make it more interesting especially when played with other guitarists, just like that of the bands. Learn bass guitar now; start with the basics and then try to learn the advanced notes as well.

Improving Your Vocal Cords - Voice Lessons

Guitarists have their guitars, drummers have their drums, and singers, well, singers only have their voice. Though this "instrument" is innate in all of us, only a few can harness it so well. This said, you might want to know how to take care of your vocal cords properly. If you're already enrolled in voice lessons, then this how-to guide will surely be of help. So read on and find out how you can sing better and more comfortably.

Breathing is Key
Like a guitar's amplifier, your breath is what fuels your voice. With that in mind, it's critical that you know how to breathe properly in between verses. Without proper breathing, there's almost a sure chance that you're not unleashing your voice's fullest potential. If you're breathing correctly, you should notice that your stomach (not your chest) should expand whenever you inhale. Done correctly, your diaphragm--the muscle beneath your lungs--inflates. As it inflates, your voice could produce higher and longer notes. So, again, breathe properly.

Watch Your Posture
Try this for a moment: while standing, hunch down till your arms can reach your toes. Then, try singing a tone or two. Not so easy, wasn't it? See, posture also affects how you sing. How you stand affects the airway between your lungs and your mouth, affecting your breath, and in this context, your singing abilities. So stand properly by having your legs a shoulder-width apart. Have your chest lifted at an angle where your lungs have enough room to expand. Also, remember to relax as being tensed would also stiffen your posture.

If It Hurts, Something's Wrong
It's important that you sing at a strong, yet comfortable, volume. If something hurts, say your throat, then it might mean that you're already at the limit of your vocal range. It might also mean that you're doing something wrong. Now if you feel pain when you're trying to hit a certain note, then that means that note is outside your range. Don't go over the limit and attempt that you could hit that note, however, as this might damage your vocal cords. Worse, you may even suffer permanent vocal box damage. This said, choose your songs wisely.

Warm-Ups are Always Good

Never, ever hit the stage (or any other performance for that matter) without doing any warm-ups. This is one of the most fundamental rules in voice lessons, yet not a lot of singers practice it. With that in mind, start out by doing simple breath exercises. A minute or two of deep breathing should do the trick. Then, start humming a scale or two. Once done, proceed by working on a couple of scales. Not only does this prepare you for the recital at hand, it'll also warm your vocal cords. Again, remember to relax.

Relax, Relax, and Relax Some More
In voice lessons, the term "relaxed" isn't meant the same way you do when you're having a vacation. Relaxed, in the context of singing, is a state of mind. See, being too worked up could lead you to forget the lyrics, proper intonation, volume, and other assortments of mistakes that you wouldn't want to commit on stage. Though your voice might be of top quality, there's no point to it if you're going to mess up all the techniques you've been practicing on. This said, stay loose.

It is believed that the key to a successful singing career is singing in harmony and harmony is said to be the key to music. If a singer is not capable of singing in harmony would not be able to sing with musicians, with accompanied instruments and recorded music or with other singers. Singers like these would be embarrassed every time they perform because of this failure. So, it is very important to learn to sing in harmony if you want to be a successful singer someday.

If you want to pursue a career in singing, singing in harmony is very important to you, because one of the basic things you need to learn is how to harmonize. In this article i am going to give you helpful tips on how to learn to sing in harmony.

In learning to harmonize in singing you have probably been using most of your life and already mastered it. It is very important to listen to music, you should take time to listen to songs and sit down. You should pay careful attention to the music you're listening and as much as possible try to identify the musical instruments being used as well as the notes. Take with you a pen and paper and take down the notes and musical instruments you think is used in the song. Also listen carefully to the singer and identify also what pitches he or she is using. Taking down notes of the things that you hear is one of the best way to develop your power of understanding and concentration.

Another way to improve your listening skils is to try to listen to a variety of music and musical genres you are not fond of listening or is new to you. This way it helps you develop discipline and teaches you how to listen carefully to the things that you hear. Listening to instrumental music is a very good way to harmonize with music with musical instruments, because the secret to singing in harmony is for you to be able to identify right away what kind of musical instruments is being used and synchronize your voice with it.

If you are capable of playing a musical instrument, let's say a piano or guitar, try using that instrument and at the same time sing, use that instrument whenever you practice singing. By doing his you will be able to learn to sing in harmony with an instrument. As an added practice, when you do this try recording yourself singing while playing the instrument and listen to it so that you will be able to know if you are singing in harmony.

The objective of singing in harmony is to learn to sing with other singing or learn to sing with a musical accompaniment, in no time you will be practicing singing with other singers. The best way to di this is for you to join a choir or a band and try to work with them and see if you fit well enough and eventually learn to sing in harmony.

The secret to playing the piano in the shortest possible time, is to first of all learn piano chords. Starting with chords and playing songs you are familiar with from your own record collection gives you the confidence that YOU REALLY CAN DO THIS! There are some terrific tunes and rhythms you can play just by mastering a few easy chords, and the knowledge you gain at this early stage will be invaluable later on.

As you probably know, middle C sits near the center of your keyboard. It is the white key immediately to the left of a group of two black keys. The two white keys to the left of middle C are A and B (from left to right). The next four white keys are D, E, F and G.

The black keys are known as sharps or flats, named after the nearest white key to them on their left or right. For example, the black key between the white C and D keys is known as C sharp OR D flat.

A chord is a group of 3 or more notes that when played together make a complete sound. When this sound is played rhythmically, and chords used in a particular sequence, a background sound is created that can support a melody (the main tune) or lyrics (vocals).

Let's learn piano chords - by mastering just 4 easy ones you can be playing songs in no time at all. These are the chords C, A minor (or Am), F and G. These are all played using just the white keys, so you should be able to master this in just a short space of time. To play the chord of C, with your right hand, simply place your thumb on middle C, your middle finger on E and your little finger on G. Play these three notes at the same time - and you are playing the C chord.

If you move the whole shape of your hand along two notes to the left, you will play the chord A minor. Your thumb will be on A, your middle finger on C and your little finger on E. Play this for a while, then alternate between the chords of C and A minor.

Now add the chord of F to your repertoire by moving your hand two more notes to the left of your A minor chord, so your thumb is on F, your middle finger on A and your little finger on C.

Finally, by moving your whole hand shape one note to the right, you will be playing the chord of G (i.e. the notes G, B and D).

By repeating the chord sequence of C, Am, F and G you will start to get familiar with it. Your hands may hurt a little at first, but this is normal for a beginner. Keep at it.

Many popular songs use the same sequence. See if you can sing along to "Blue Moon", "Red Red Wine", "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" or "All I Have To Do Is Dream" as you play the chords. There you go - I told you that if you learn piano chords, you could be making music in no time at all.

So you want to become a professional guitarist?
From my experience and doing lots of research, over 75% of people could become a professional guitarist, with a bit of motivation.

The start
So what you want to do is, check out ebay or any other guitar shop online (tends to be cheaper than retail stores), then find yourself a nice little guitar for about $120, I recommend an acoustic guitar. Buy it obviously.
Depending on what type of music you're into, you'll want to play that certain style. I can only go from experience so, I am into punk and heavy metal so I learnt power chords when I first started playing. When you have picked up some chords, and know your way around the frets, and have learnt how to read tabular, simply go to a tab website and have a look around for songs you like, and try to learn them. Don't forget to learn everything you see on every guitar related website.

Once you're familar with a whole load of songs, maybe you can try writing your own music.

Practice makes perfect

Practice all the time! Every waking hour of the day, have that guitar in your hands. After a while your guitar will be so familar to you, it'll be apart of you. Practice everything. Practice songs over and over again. This way you hopefully won't mess up if your doing a live showcase or something like that. You should be practicing atleast a year before you even think about starting a band or playing a live show.

Make friends

You should be making friend with people who have the same goals as you. Go to local gigs, meet the band, have conversation with them, ask for tips. It's all about who you know. It helps if you know someone in the music industry, if they know you well, they might think your worth the risk of time and money. Know other local bands, they might know someone who is the music industry.

Myspace
I cannot stress how important this is. Make your myspace music page, upload some recordings, add loads of people. Get your music heard. Myspace is a godsend for countless independant artists. Use the most of the free features. You should then start to get a fan base, this will show people from the music industry that your music will sell. How do you think the Arctic Monkeys made it to the big time? They used myspace and made it work for them. A record company found there myspace page, seen there fan base, listened to there music and figured there music would sell. And oh boy did it sell, there no.1 hit I bet you look good on the dancefloor knocked the Sugababes from the no.1 spot in 2005.

When music students ask how to prepare for a show I always tell them the same things, practice your material right before you go to bed and get plenty of sleep. When a vocal student asks the same question the list gets a little bit longer. For those who have not studied the voice as an instrument it may come as a shock how careful one must be with it. Here are a few guidelines for new vocalists, courtesy of Mark Erwin from the School of Rock Music, St. Paul, MN. (http://www.schoolofrock.com)

One of the most important things to remember is that we don’t ever want to over stress our instrument. We all know that the fastest way to lose our voice is to yell or scream- as we often do when we go see our rock heroes. There is a time to be a fan and there is a time to be a vocalist. The day before your show is not the time to be a screaming fan!

But there are many less obvious ways to strain your instrument that vocalists need to remember. When we get a tickle or feel phlegm in our throat our first thought is to clear it. The classic “eh hem” is one of the most damaging things you can do to your voice and yet it is the most common reaction. Instead, vocalists should drink water and swallow a couple of times to clear the irritation. Another common misperception is that we should protect our voice by whispering. Did you know that our vocal chords work twice as hard when we whisper? This brings me to my last point on common ways we strain our voice without knowing it- voice placement. Many of us speak in a vocal range far lower than we are meant to, causing continual strain on our vocal chords. Yawn out loud for a moment. Notice how high your voice is. Well my friend- that is your natural vocal range!

There are also certain foods and beverages that should not be consumed the day of a show. Though you may not think you have any food allergies, it is very common to have an extremely mild allergy to dairy products, wheat products and nuts. Your body’s natural reaction to the allergen is to create phlegm in the throat. Not only can phlegm alter the tone of your voice, it will make you want to clear it- bringing us back to my earlier point. Vocalists also want to stay away from food and beverage products that contain caffeine or high levels of acidity. Both caffeine and citric acid will dry out your vocal chords, again causing unneeded strain on your instrument. In addition, products with a high level of acidity like fruits and some vegetables can cause acid reflux- which in some cases may result in the loss of your voice all together.

Being aware of your voice and the things that can damage it are the first step. We may not have to plug into a tuner, change broken strings, or cart around heavy kick drums, but we do have an instrument to care for.

It doesn't really matter the price range that you have in mind. Years back a low cost guitar would be a nightmare to play, and for a beginner it was worse, I had one for my first guitar. These days with advanced machining and mass production techniques there are a large number of guitar manufacturers turning out quite good guitars at low cost. Regardless of the price if you take any two guitars of the same make and model, even with consecutive production numbers it's quite likely that one will be easier to play than the other.

How well a guitar plays is determined by the action.The action on a guitar is the distance between the underside of the strings and the frets. The frets are the thin metal strips that lie across the neck. The maximum distance is found in the area where the neck and body join. If the distance is greater than say 3mm then it will be harder to play the guitar up the neck than it should be and for a beginner it can totally discouraging. Keep in mind that that a small difference can mean a lot. A 4mm gap is a big step up from 3mm.

There are four things that influence the action. 1. The Saddle Height 2. The Nut Height 3. The Truss Rod Adjustment 4. The Neck Angle

The first three can be adjusted. If the neck angle is bad then adjusting the other three will bring about little change to the action. Picture a guitar lying level on its back and you place a straight edge along neck and extending down to touch the bridge. The bridge is the piece of timber attached to the body of the guitar that has the strings attached to it, and the saddle is the (usually) white plastic strip that sits in the bridge and has the strings running across it. When the neck angle is good then the neck and the top of the bridge will be on the same line. When the angle is bad then the straight edge will point to a spot closer to where the bridge joins the body and is a really bad case it would touch the body of the guitar first.

Now we cannot carry out this test in a music store, however what we can do is sight down the neck and it's fairly easy to see where the line of the neck points to, it should be in line with the top of the bridge.

This is all probably a lot to absorb in one go, the important thing is to be aware of the action and any good guitar salesperson should know all this and be able to point them out to you so you can make the best choice so you have a guitar that is easy to play.

Lastly do not buy a guitar because you like the color of it, buy the guitar that sounds good and plays well. Good Luck

Tab is a very simple system that can be read by anyone, even children.

2. First Time is the Hardest, if You can Get a Teacher, by All Means Do So Playing your first few chords or verse is like learning to swim. I will admit. When I had learned by myself through guitar tabs and free lessons online, it took quite some time (weeks). Learning from a teacher accelerates your learning curve a lot. As much as five fold. If not, by all means you can learn by yourself. A site like justinguitar.com or cyberfret.com is always a good start to learn.

3. Start from Your Favourite Song We humans learn fastest by combining positive emotions into our daily guitar practice. Getting to play your catchy tune on your guitar is the most satisfying feeling you will get. I swear on this. Dedicate yourself to complete the song. On the other hand, playing and singing a song can be tough. If you can do it, why not? Otherwise, take your time learning to strum chords(A,B,C,D,E,F,G) or pluck notes(individual notes on guitar).

Just when you think digital pianos and keyboards can't get any better, along comes one of the big manufacturers with a new range of instruments which blows away all the ones that went before. And if you're looking for rock piano lessons so you can learn to play one of these amazing instruments, I've got some good news ... there's never been a better time to learn to play and the quality of lessons just keeps getting better too.

In this article I'll be looking at how you can find the best rock piano lessons, whether you're looking for a teacher in your neighborhood, or you want something a bit less formal like online lessons.

1. Finding a teacher in your neighborhood

Once upon a time, there was only one way to learn to play the piano. You had to learn to read music, study music theory, practice scales until your fingers were numb, and play every piece of music from a written score. Times have changed and now there are many new ways to learn to play the piano, whatever kind of instrument you have or are thinking of buying. But before trying to find one of the new ways of learning, you might consider the old way, with a twist.

You see, even the music establishment is so much more diverse than it once was. A whole generation of musicians has grown up accepting that non-classical forms of music, such as jazz, blues, rock and pop, are art forms in themselves. The result of this, especially if you live in a town or city, is that you should be able to find a music teacher in your neighborhood who is quite happy to teach you how to play rock keyboard.

Of course, you need to do your research before making your decision. As well as asking local candidates how much they charge, you also need to find out whether they teach on digital keyboards, whether they use other digital media such as software for writing your own material, whether they provide opportunities for students meeting, playing with and learning from each other, and so on.

2. Informal Piano Lessons

The alternatives to a local piano teacher are either going to your nearest music shop and finding suitable books, or DVDs to tutor you or venturing online to find them there, or to look on the internet for a suitable package of lessons you can download directly onto your computer.

There are now a number of internet based music packages that can teach you all you need to know about the basics of learning to play piano. These range from piano lessons for beginners, containing a number of different modules to get you reading music and playing by ear, to more advanced courses aimed at musicians with greater skill and experience. The disadvantage with this method is that many of these packages lack quality. So, if you're thinking of buying one, as with finding a local teacher, you need to do your research. Try to find a review site run by someone who doesn't have a vested interest in pointing you in the direction of a particular package of lessons, for example, because they are affiliates of the package in question and derive a fee from each one that's sold.

The good news is the quality of the best packages of online lessons are getting better all the time. But you have to be realistic. Many of them will never be able to teach you to play beyond a basic level. And although you don't need to read music to play well, it certainly helps if you can.

That said, you should be able to find a package of lessons that teaches you patterns of chords you can then use as a platform for further learning. The thing about the internet, and about multimedia generally, is that it can provide you with a level of playing that's right for you at the time. After having learnt some of the basics, you could do a more advanced course, perhaps with the same tutor, and take your playing to a new level. In this way you can build on your experience gradually.

Hopefully, this article will provide you with an essential introduction to rock piano lessons. Providing you are realistic about what you can achieve, there's no reason you shouldn't find an exciting tailor-made package that will ignite your career as a musician. And good luck to you.

Think about why you want to learn to play guitar

You'll only become a good guitar player if you understand why you want to learn to play. So ask yourself, do you really want to do this? It might be that what you want to do is learn to play a musical instrument, and you think that the guitar is the easiest one to choose because there are so many books and websites showing you how. You might have chosen the guitar because guitars are cheaper and smaller than, say, a piano. These aren't really the right reasons - if in reality you want to play piano, but you chose the guitar because it seems more practical, your heart will never really be in your guitar playing, and even with a teaching system as good as Jamorama you'll never get very good at it.

Know your guitar playing goals

Once you're sure you really do want to play guitar, think about the sort of guitar player you want to be. Do you want to be the next Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen? If so, you're going to get real sick, real quick of strumming along to "Michael Row the Boat Ashore". On the other hand, you might just want to be able to accompany yourself singing a few popular tunes, in which case you're going to lose interest fast if your teacher is trying to get you excited about Pentatonic Scales and Mixolydian Modes.

When I started playing years ago, all I wanted to do was play punk, but I got bogged down in scales and keys, and nearly gave up. If someone had just shown me a few power chords, I'd have been close to doing what I really wanted to do. I'd have started having fun, my confidence would have grown, and the rest would have followed.

Make sure you know what you want to learn to play, whether it's rock, classical, Spanish, or whatever. Then make sure your guitar teacher is happy to guide you down the right path, or that you buy the right book.

Try before you buy

Cupboards, wardrobes, closets and attics all over the world are full of unused guitars, bought by people, or for people, who didn't get very far before they gave up. (There are also plenty of music stores out there who will happily sell you just such a guitar, with no money-back guarantee if you simply get bored!) So don't rush out and buy a guitar, especially a new one.

If you can, find a friend who already plays. Ask your work colleagues, your school friends, your kids' friends. Chances are there'll be someone who will be willing to lend, or even give you their old "beginner" guitar. If you get along with the guitar, they might sell it to you, which will be much cheaper than buying new, and less hassle than buying from eBay - I know from personal experience that not everyone knows how to pack a guitar for posting.

Take a Friend for a Test Drive

Would you buy a car before you learned to drive? Almost definitely not. It's pretty hard to take it out for a test drive if you don't know how. But it's amazing how many people buy a guitar before they can play. You don't want to be one of those people. Before you make the plunge and buy your first guitar, talk to someone who already plays, and if possible, get him or her to go with you to the guitar store. That way, you can get the guitar "test-driven" for you.

Most musicians can still remember what it was like when they started out, and should stop you making the same mistakes. I remember the first electric guitar I ever had - the action was set so high, it was almost impossible to fret the string properly. I didn't know any better - I thought it was just because I was a beginner. Again, this nearly made me give up. Luckily, someone showed me what was wrong, and once I got it sorted out, my progress was much faster.

Learn To Play Jingle Bells Without Piano Sheet Music

In this piano lesson we will learn to play piano Christmas music. We will use piano tab notation so you don't need to read piano sheet music.

Jingle Bells is one of the most popular secular Christmas songs in the world. The most played part of the song is the refrain which we will concentrate on in this piano lesson.

In this piano lesson you will learn to play Jingle Bells without the use of piano sheet music. After this learn to play piano tutorial you will be able to play the melody with both hands!

Instead of piano sheet music we will use piano tab notation which will tell you where to place your fingers as you play the melody.

The first thing we will do is to locate the note C.

You will find the note C on many places on the piano. It is the white key to the left of two black keys.

Now it's time to locate the middle C. It is the C right in the middle of the keyboard. On an ordinary upright piano it is near the keyhole.

In our piano lesson we will number the keys. The middle C in our piano tab notation is called 1.

What does 1 mean?

When you see the number 1 you are to press down the middle C once. The white key to the right of C is called 2, the next 3 and so on.

Let's play some piano tab notes:

Now you have played a C-major scale with the actual notes C D E F G A B.

Let's proceed in our piano lesson and play the first notes of Jingle Bells!

This is the first part of the refrain. Easy?

I guess that you hear that the third and sixt note has to be a bit longer to create the melody Jingle Bells.

So far we have only used the right hand for playing the melody. How can you use your left hand?

Let's make this piece a little bit more difficult and also more rewarding to play by using the left hand for bass notes.

The notes from C to the next C is called an octave. The keys are grouped this way on the whole keyboard.

You also have these notes to the left of the middle C. We can call these notes the left octave.

If you use the notes 1-7 in the left octave to play bass notes with your left hand we can notate the melody in the following way:

The note to the right of the slash is the bass note. 3/1 means that as you play the first number 3 with your right hand you simultaneously play number 1 in the left octave with your left hand.

I guess you have noticed that you only play bass notes together with some of the melody notes.

What fingers should you use as you play?

You can and maybe you already use your index fingers on both hands to play but it will be easier to find your notes if you cultivate the habit of using all your fingers.

On your right hand you can use your thumb to play number 1 and your index finger to play number 2 and so on.

BUYING A GREAT GUITAR

When it comes time to buy a guitar, a person should shop carefully as they will want to choose a guitar that is going to last for a long time and have a great sound. Careful inspection of the guitar is of key importance to make sure that it is in great shape. Whether you are buying a new factory-made one, a handmade guitar, or a second-hand one, choose wisely and use good judgment.

Before actually shopping for the guitar, decide whether a brand new guitar or an older used instrument is right for you. New guitars come with a warranty so if there is a problem, they can be returned or refunded. Mass-produced guitars are less expensive than custom-made ones. If a person is just learning guitar, then a new, mass-produced one is a great choice. If the person is an accomplished player and can distinguish superior sound quality, consider spending a bit more money and purchase a custom guitar or one that has been handmade.

Sound Quality
Probably one of the first considerations when choosing a guitar is the quality of sound that the instrument produces. If you are not a person that can determine tone and good sound from bad sound yourself, ask someone at the store or have a musician or friend that is musically knowledgeable go with you. Watch for guitars that need to be tuned frequently, as this indicates that the sound quality will not be consistent. Make sure that there is a warm tone or sound when the guitar is played and that it does not sound harsh. Again, if you don't know how to play bring someone with you that does or talk to the staff at the store and ask them to play for you.

Condition
One of the next considerations should be the actual physical condition of the guitar. New guitars will usually be in better condition than used guitars, but some people have carefully maintained their instruments and they may be in as good of condition as the new ones for much less cost. Watch for the condition of the frets, they should be set-up properly and not too high or worn down, as this will cause tonal variations and difficulty in chording and playing.

Avoid guitars that are laminated, as they tend to look worn and used very quickly if the laminate becomes chipped or scratched. The neck should be absolutely straight with no warping or bending of any kind. The machine heads should turn smoothly and without sticking or stripping. Make sure that they actually tighten and loosen the strings correctly or it will be impossible to tune the guitar.

I guess you are learning to play piano in order to become a better pianist. Do you know that there are many secret learning processes in action as you practice on your piano. Let's find out the truth!

I presume that you practice on the piano with the hope of becoming a better instrumentalist, pianist and musician and and in order to experience the joy and satisfaction that follows.

The learning processes in action as you try to learn to play the piano can lead you forward towards you goals. However, some things you learn can limit your progress and I think it is important to be aware of these factors.

Let's take a look at what you don't want to learn as you play piano! Let me mention three things!

1. At times when you practice on your piano you might experience stress and other uncomfortable feelings due to a deadline in the form of a upcoming piano lesson you don't feel prepared for or other disturbing thoughts.

The feelings you experience as you practice a specific piece of music have a tendency to be evoked when you play the same piece at another occasion.

2. Can tensions stick to your sheet music? Your actual muscle tension level when you play a piano composition tends to be present when you play the same piece of music in public.

In other words, it will be more difficult to perform and play a piano composition in a relaxed manner when you have practiced it with a high tension level.

3. Can you learn not to play a piece of music? I guess you practice on your piano and take piano lessons in order to become a better player.

However, if you don't concentrate on your piano playing and if you play new passages too fast you will probably make a lot of mistakes.

These mistakes tend to slow down the learning process and in fact they will be a part of the learning process. The more mistakes you make playing a particular piano sheet music passage the harder it will be to play it right.

Why is it so? All your earlier mistakes will accumulate and disturb you as you try to play a passage right. To play a passage wrong will become easier and easier the more times you make mistakes.

A: Some say that you should never clear your throat, but excess mucous inhibits free vocal cord coordination.

The trick is to find a way to clear your throat without irritating it.

Do a gentle "whispered cough" (without tone) and then swallow. Repeat.

If this doesn't work, you need to deal with the excess mucous production.

Squeeze a 1/4 of a lemon in a tall glass of water and sip over about 20 minutes.

This should cut through a lot of the excess mucous. Furthermore, watch your dairy intake... especially cheese. You should never eat it on the day of a performance!

As a professional concert pianist I often have people ask me, "I'm in my 50's is it too late to learn piano?" Well, there is no simple answer to this question since everyone's capacity to learn and everyone's passion to learn is different.

But, based on my experience it is never too late. However, it is absolutely imperative that you Start Learning Now! Why? Because, a very wise man once told me, if you're not learning you're dying. You see, life is all about learning. It's what gives us reason to live. Can you think of anything better about life than the new experiences, relationships and wisdom that comes from learning? So, if you have any passion at all for learning to play piano music then I highly reccommend that you start right away.

The most important question you should be asking youself is; "How can I learn faster and retain more information?"

Do you know what most people don't understand about the learning process? It's not how much information can you cram into your head at one time but, how much information you can actually retain that causes you to learn faster and more efficiently. What happens is; people inevitably try to tackle all at once the incredible amount of work that it takes to play the piano. Not only is that impossible to do, but it's not much fun either. And, that's why most people give up after only trying for a short period of time.

Let's talk about the way most people were taught to learn. Think back for a moment to when you were in school. Do you remember cramming for an exam? Most people certainly remember the anxiety associated with it. You cram as much information as you can into your head in a very short period of time, hoping to get a good grade on your exam. So, what would happen 2 weeks after taking the exam if you had to take it again? How much would you remember? Not much at all I'm sure! That's why learning this way is so painful because you're never able to show consistent long term retention.

Now, imagine for a moment that you applied this technique of learning to the piano. You cram for 2 weeks as much information as you can get into your brain about a piece of piano music. Then, you stop practicing for 2 weeks. Then, you go back and try to play what you learned. How much do you think you could get right? Based on my experience, "Almost Nothing!"

In my line of work I am responsible for not only remembering a minimum of 1.5 hours of piano music for every concert I perform but, I have to perform it flawlessly. Is this possible? Yes it is! But, not by learning the way most people learn. You see, there is a formula that works best for learning to play piano music and it's the same formula that works for learning anything worthwhile. And, here it is....

10-24-7

What does this mean? Well, 10 stands for the amount of energy you put into learning what it is you're learning. How many things can you learn at once? One! So get rid of that big pile of music sitting on the piano because that just represents stress! You can't possibly learn all that anyway. So, just learn one thing at a time and do it at a level 10 which is; giving 100% of your energy until you can play it without thinking.

Then, do the same thing again in 24 hours. At a level 10 (100% of your energy), learn the same single thing you just learned the day before. Then, in 7 days do it again and I promise you that your retention rate for that one thing you learned will go up by 85%. Is this possible? Yes! That's how I'm able to perform as many concerts as I do and never take a sheet of music with me on stage. I learn one thing at a time. But, once I learn it, I don't forget it...ever!

There's a term we use for this type of learning and it's called "accelerated learning techniques" or "advanced learning techniques." It's what I teach in my seminars because it's what works best for me and for the hundreds of people I've taught it to. So, if you want to learn piano music, even if it's for the first time, follow my example. Use the 10-24-7 approach, you won't regret it.

James Joseph Croce (January 10, 1943 -- September 20, 1973), popularly known as Jim Croce (pronounced CRO-chee), was an American singer-songwriter.

Croce was born in South Philadelphia. He graduated from Upper Darby High School in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania in 1960 where in 1976, he was the first former student to be added to the Upper Darby High School's Wall of Fame. While attending Villanova University (1965 graduate), Croce was a student deejay at WXVU, became interested in becoming a professional musician, and met his future wife, Ingrid Jacobson, at a hootenanny at Convention Hall in Philadelphia, where he was a judge for a contest. When they married he converted to Judaism.

Croce, 30, and Muehleisen, 24, died in a small commercial plane crash on September 20, 1973, one day before his third ABC album, I Got a Name was to be released. The posthumous release included three hits, "I Got A Name," "Workin' At The Car Wash Blues" and "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song."

Croce had just completed a concert in Natchitoches, Louisiana, and was flying to Sherman, Texas. The pilot and all passengers (Croce, Muehleisen, and the comic who was the show's warm up act) were killed instantly at 10:45 PM EST on September 20, 1973, less than an hour after the end of their last concert. Upon takeoff, the plane did not gain enough altitude to clear an area of large pecan trees at the end of the runway. The official report from the NTSB hints that the charter pilot, Robert Newton Elliott, who had severe coronary artery disease and had run a portion of the 3 miles to the airport from a motel, may have suffered a heart attack causing him to crash into the trees on a clear runway with excellent visibility. A later investigation placed sole blame for the accident on pilot error.

Croce was laid to rest in the Philadelphia area, even though he had recently relocated to San Diego. Family, friends, and fans were stunned to learn of the premature demise of two gifted, gentle, and unpretentious singer-songwriters, who were taken well before their time.

News of the premature deaths of the duo sparked a massive interest in Jim's first two albums -- "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" and "Life and Times" - as well as the "I Got A Name" single, which was released later that same week. This was followed closely by the release of the album of the same title. Sales soared and resulted in three gold records. A "Greatest Hits" package released in 1974 also proved to be extraordinarily popular. Here are a few guidelines that will help you out. Two important things to remember is to have a quiet place to practice and you need lots of patients. Learning to play guitar by ear is by far one of the hardest things to learn.

Having a Basic Knowledge of Music.
A basic knowledge of music is best if you want to learn to play guitar by ear. Keep in mind that this doesn't mean you have to be a professional or be able to read sheet music. Just having some basic experience or general music knowledge will be very helpful.

Having patience.
An important key you need when you learn to play guitar by ear is patience. In order to perfect the sound you need to be able to repeat the same cords and riffs many times. Be prepared because this becomes very repetitive.

Using CDs.
A good place to start when you began to learn to play guitar by ear is by going through your CD collection. Try to find CDs that have extensive guitar sections. Carlos Santana or Mark Knopfler, (lead guitarist for Dire Straits) are excellent examples to follow. By listening to some of the best guitarist in the world you can try to replicate their sound.

Sheet Music Not Needed.
You will not need sheet music when you learn to play guitar by ear, or have long sessions of chords and riffs to develop your natural talent. You can listen to a guitar set and replicate it; this is a way that you can develop your own natural talent. This will also be beneficial should you choose to join a band in the future. On June 25, 2009, Jackson collapsed at a rented home on North Carolwood Drive in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles. Attempts at resuscitating him by his personal physician were unsuccessful. 5 Steps In Learning To Play The Electric Guitar

The first and most obvious step is to get the guitar and equipment that you will be needing. This means a reasonable guitar, decent amplifier with enough grunt, robust and hard wearing connecting cables. If you also have a set of headphones lying around, then family and neighbors will be thankful and more supportive as you practice Learning To Play The Electric Guitar.

As far as the amp goes, if you are going to be doing more than just playing to yourself, then get one that will do the job in terms of power and distortion free output. You can get an effects box later to add good distortion later. Your amp may even have it as a feature.

The next step is to get to grips with your electric guitar. Have a play with the controls and learn how to tune it up. With new strings there will be slippage and stretching so you must master the art of tuning your guitar before you can start to play anything.

Talking about strings, your electric guitar probably came with standard steel strings. Getting the basics right comes from regular and diligent practice. Your heroes didn't just pick up a guitar and create an album. In fact some of them have received a lot of formal musical training and even have University Degrees in Music. The point is, be prepared to put in regular practice and you will be rewarded.

The next step is to know the sort of music you want to play first. Put on the ones you are keen on and even have a go at picking out some of the notes as you play along. You will be surprised how easy it can be to follow a small piece here and there.. List out the tracks you like so you can discuss them with your instructor or playing friends.

The last step is to begin with some lessons and learn how to play properly. There are a number of ways to get lessons. From friends who are already playing and you like what you hear, attend classes, or the most flexible way is via the site below where you get Free lessons. It is the first-ever online collaborative orchestra. The open call for entries was until January 28, 2009. Musicians wishing to audition had to post a video of themselves playing the "Internet Symphony No. 1 'Eroica'", by Tan Dun, along with a second talent video of themselves playing a preset audition piece to YouTube. Musicians of all cultures were encouraged to audition, as even if a particular instrument was not specifically scored in the original score, a musician was allowed to simply play a part in the same pitch range as their native instrument. Judges selected finalists and alternates was from January 29 to February 13, 2009 and the finalists were voted on by the YouTube community from February 14 to February 22, 2009.

The concert featured a series of short pieces that had been rehearsed for several days, as well as guest soloists Joshua Roman, Gil Shaham, Measha Brueggergosman, and classical / electronica composer Mason Bates. Three children tutored for the event by pianist Lang Lang played a one piano / six hand arrangement of a Rachmaninoff waltz.

If you are in the market for a new or used piano for sale, it is a good idea to know a little bit about the different shapes and styles of pianos that are most common, so that you can pick the best type of piano for you and your home. For many people, the size and shape are very important factors depending on the floor space available in the home. According to shape, horizontal and vertical are the two most basic categories of pianos.

These terms refer to how the piano's soundboard is arranged. The soundboard on a horizontal piano is built parallel to the floor. These are also known as grand pianos, though they take up the most amount of space, they are considered to have the most full and lush sounds as well as dynamic range. Amongst the horizontal, or grand, pianos are several different subcategories of piano designs. The Petite Grand is the smallest horizontal piano design, and it ranges from four to five feet in length, but it is still a quite a powerful instrument. The Baby Grand is perhaps the most popular of fine household pianos. These range from one to two feet longer than Petite Grands. Baby Grands can produce a marvelous sound without taking over an entire room. The next most well known horizontal piano is the Concert Grand. This piano is considered the finest in tone, key response, and action, and it consumes a whopping nine feet in length. It is the most commonly used piano for professional music productions such as symphonies and operas. Between the Concert grand and the Baby Grand, there are a host of other sizes, such as the Medium Grand, Parlor Grand, and Ballroom Grand, each with its own unique shape and sound.

Vertical piano designs are much more common in the home for a couple of reasons. Because the soundboard is arranged vertically, the piano takes up less space and also requires less material for manufacturing, thus they are less expensive than most horizontal varieties. There are four basic types of vertical pianos. Spinet pianos are approximately 36 to 38 inches in height and around 60 inches in width, and they are the smallest of vertical pianos. For those that live in extremely limited quarters, the Spinet is an ideal solution, however, the power and accuracy are somewhat compromised due to the size. The Console piano is taller than the Spinet at 40 to 43 inches and very similar in width. Console pianos are designed to compliment interior design, so they come in many different shapes, finishes, and designs. A Studio piano is the most common vertical piece found in music schools around the world because it has a larger soundboard while still a vertical design. This creates a great tone quality due to the longer strings. However, the tallest of vertical pianos is the actual Upright piano. These range from 50 to 60 inches in height and are most common amongst the grandparent generation. There are many of these built fifty years ago that have maintained a very rich tone and rival some horizontal designs in quality.

Take the time to see and play several of these types of pianos before you decide on the right one for you. This largely depends on your budget, the amount of space you have, and how you plan to use it. If you are opening a new concert hall, the answer is simple. The concert grand is your only option. However, if you are a student learning to play for the first time, you might consider on of the vertical varieties.

Even President Ronald Reagan had cited Born in the USA as the embodiment of American values (much to Bruces annoyance). It had been a year since the triumphant conclusion of a record breaking world-wide tour and so anticipation was high for his return to the stage. However, the new army of fans who had jumped on the BITUSA bandwagon was in for a bit of a shock. Bruces first live show after the tour (apart from a couple of unannounced Stone Pony guest spots) featured no pounding rock anthems with the all conquering E Street Band. Instead, he opened his set at Neil Youngs all-acoustic Bridge Benefit with a stark accapella version of You Can Look, But You Better Not Touch. What followed was a mixture of stripped down versions of recent hits and lesser know (and in some cases unreleased) songs. His only accompaniment was acoustic guitar and accordion. The results were stunning.

Did you ever wonder why chords were constructed and named the way they are? A basic knowledge of chord construction is important because it makes the task of learning new chords much easier. Once you have a sold grasp of the fundamentals- then comes the fun part!

Let's look at some basic chord construction.

All chord names are taken from the Major or Minor scale key you are playing in. Each scale has 8 notes. Imagine you are playing in the key of C. The eight notes would be C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and a higher C. Now think about these notes in their relation to the root note (C in this example). C=1, D=2, E=3, F=4, G=5, A=6; what do you think B= ? I think you get it.

Chords themselves are made up of several notes in the same key played simultaneously. How about your basic major chord? A major chord has three notes in it: a 1, 3 and 5 note. In the key of C these notes would be C, E, and G (1, 3, 5). In the key of G the notes are G, B, and D.

Should we try a minor chord construction? A minor chord also has three notes in it: a 1, b3, and 5. The only note in the minor chord that is different than the major chord is the third note in the key. For a minor the note is lowered one half note from a 3 to a flat 3 (b3). In the key of C, the 3 is an E note and the b3 is an Eb (E Flat). Hence, Cm (C Minor) means you flat the 3 of the major chord and make it a minor. A minor G chord would be G, Bb, D (1, b3, 5).

The Major and Minor are the most basic chords to construct and also the most useful. Try to understand those and the rest will be logical and not very difficult. I have found the best way to learn the guitar is to watch somebody else and then copy them. Here are some more advanced chord constructions for your learning. You can find the fingering for any chord on a free web resource at http://chordfind.com/.

Dmaj7 indicates that you add another note to the 1-3-5 of a standard major chord, in this case the 7. So a Dmaj7 would have D, F#, A, and C#.

Csus4 tells you to replace the 3 with a 4. Hence, a Csus4 would have C, F, G (1-4-5)

Dominant Seventh Chords are very useful and very common chords. These are chords with a lowered seventh. A C7 Chords would have C-E-G-Bb (1,3,5,7b).

Augmented chords have the 5th raised a half-step (one fret). The C+ (C Augmented) is C-E-G# (1-3-5#).

Chords with odd-numbered tones, such as maj7, 9, 11, 13 are called extensions. A C11 is C-D-F-G-Bb.

Just make sure you learn chord construction for the basic chords first (Major and Minor) then move on to the more advanced chords and you will have no problems. Use the resources to help you build a solid foundation. You are well on your way to understanding how chords are constructed.

Not only will you find the songs you're interested in but you will discover many forums that you can join for free! The amazing thing about the internet is its community...folks really want to help other folks and the same is true with your fellow guitar players . Remember, always pay forward any help or advice that you might be able to give too!

Tip 3:

Sign up for an online guitar course...WARNING!...Not all guitar courses are of equal quality...So don't rush in!

This is the way I have gone and I can fully recommend it although as I have said be very careful when it comes too shelling out your hard earned cash!

Blues Guitar Chords Tutorial: The Twelve Bar Blues

This article expands on your knowledge of blues guitar chords by explaining how to play the twelve bar blues, which is the basis of many blues songs.

For this article, you should know how to play the following basic guitar chords: C, F, G, and the following essential blues guitar chords: C7, F7, G7. If you don't know how to play those chords, read my article "Blues Guitar Chords Tutorial: 7 Essential Blues Guitar Chords".

Twelve Bar Blues Basics
Not every blues song is based on the twelve bar blues, but many are, and it's the essential blues chord progression. "Twelve bar" means that it's a chord progression consisting of twelve bars, or measures. Each measure is four beats long. So a twelve bar blues has twelve measures, each of which contains four beats.

The One-Four-Five Progression
The next thing we need to learn in order to play the blues is that the twelve bar blues is what's called a "One-Four-Five" progression (or 1-4-5, or I-IV-V). This means that in any key, the blues progression uses three chords, which are known as the One, 1, or I chord, the Four, 4, or IV chord, and the Five, 5, or V chord. From now on, I'll use the roman numerals I, IV, and V to denote the chords. So, what are the I, IV, and V chords? In any key, the I chord is the major chord with the same name as the key. So in the key of C, the C chord is the I. Now, if you count up the scale, with C as I, you can find the IV and V chords. I=C, II=D, III=E, IV=F, V=G. So in C, the I chord is C, the IV is F, and the V is G. So those are the three chords you need to play the blues in C.

Back to the Twelve Bar Blues
Now that we understand the meaning of the I, IV, and V chords, we can learn the structure of the twelve bar blues progression. Think of it as three sections, each having four bars. The first section is four bars of the I chord. In C, this would be written as follows:

In that notation, each chord name (i.e., C) or slash mark (i.e., /) is a beat. You play the named chord once for every beat. The slash marks just indicate that you stay on the same chord. We give the chord name (i.e., C) again at the start of each measure.

The second four bar section has two bars of the IV chord followed by two bars of the I chord. Again, in C:

The final four bar section has a bar of the V chord, a bar of the IV chord, a bar of the I chord, and a final bar of the V chord. Again, in C:

So, putting it all together, one version of the twelve bar blues in C would look like this:

Adding The Seventh Chord
To get the real blues sound, you'll want to add the 7th chord in some places. This is different from the I, IV, V numbering system; the Seventh in this case is part of the chord's letter name (like C7, D7, or G7). In the blues, you almost always will want to substitute a seventh chord for the V, and sometimes for the I. Confusing? It just means that in C, where the V chord is G, you will play G7 instead of G major.

For simplicity's sake, you can just use 7th chords throughout the 12 bar progression:

But for a more authentic sounding blues, we'll substitute the 7th chord for the V, and for the I and IV in certain places as well. We'll also go to the IV chord in the second measure to add variety (some players call this a 'quick IV' progression).

Imagine being a proficient musician, not just able to play piano but able to play any piece of music you want to play. Sound like a pipe dream? If you have always had the itch to perform but don't want to invest a lot of time into lessons, I have great news: you can learn to play songs on the piano in relatively no time at all.

Pop music, for example, can be played in a simple chord-based method. You could teach yourself to play some Top 40 hits in a matter of minutes once you understand the basics.

Now, some genres will take longer than others. Jazz and Classical piano music, for example, requires the greatest amount of discipline, talent, and commitment. These arrangements tend to be complex, note heavy, and expressive. Yes, you can learn to play classical piano, but be prepared to invest your time into learning to play it correctly.

That said, you will find how easy it is to accelerate the learning process and reach your goal as soon as possible. Depending on what kind of learner you are, and any prior background you have in music, piano is one of the easiest instruments to learn.

Why? Because hitting a piano key is a lot like pressing a button. What benefits will you reap from playing slowly? Surprisingly enough you might become a faster guitar player and more important, you will become a better musician and guitarist!

How is this possible?

Life is full of surprises. Many people have experienced that they somehow have run away from life by hurrying all the time. Well, what has this to do with you as a guitarist!

First of all I would like to state that from personal experience I have found that many guitarists practice scales and licks faster than they should.

What do I mean with that?

Our present technical skill as a guitar player sets a limit as to how fast we can play scales and licks without doing damage to ourselves in various ways. What can happen if you play too fast?

Here is a list of things that can happen when you practice scales and other exercices or solos too fast:

1. If you play guitar in a speed that is above your technical skill level you will probably build up tensions in the muscles controlling your finger movements and also in other muscles that should not be used. You are also exposed to muscle injuries that might take a long time to cure.

The muscle tensions that is present when you practice on your guitar will tend to be there when you perform also. The way you practice is reflected in how you perform.

2. Always playing fast on your guitar deprive you of the opportunity to find out new things all by yourself on the guitar. I remember that one of my guitar pupils once came to me and said that he experienced a "dearth of licks" in his guitar playing.

One way to develop more interesting solos is to practice slowly. This will give your fingers and brain time to take other paths on the guitar frets. This will help you find your own style and help you play in a more innovative way.

3. The risk of making mistakes on your guitar increases the faster you play. If you want to learn a lick as fast as possible, the most effective way is to practice slowly without mistakes. Every mistake you make as you practice slows down your progression as you confuse your muscle memory with things that shouldn't be there.

How can you start to play slower?

1. Use a metronome. If you don't have one already you can buy a cheap digital metronome. You can adjust the volume so not to disturb your friends around you. I don't recommend that you use a metronome all the time but part of your practice time and especially when you want to play slowly and when you practice new material.

Some players feel like the metronome slows down when they play. Actually these players of course speed up unconsciously. It really is an art to keep a steady pace playing slowly.

2. Use part of your practice time to play extremely slowly with your concentration on playing as relaxed as possible in your whole body. Focus on pressing down the frets with minimal force and holding your pick with as little force as possible.

3. Learn to be aware of tensions in your entire body and especially in your hands. Be careful never to play faster on your guitar than your technical skills allows you to without building up tensions in your hands and the rest of your body. The way your body reacts when you practice is the way it will react when your perform.

In order to understand and be aware of tensions in your body I recommend that you learn muscle stretching and apply these exercises before, during and after your guitar practice sessions. Also learn muscle relaxation exercises.

The more relaxed you are as you play the better you will play on your guitar and the faster you will learn new guitar exercises. You will enjoy your guitar playing more and even your audience will feel the difference.

If your a beginner and you're thinking about buying a second hand guitar here are a few things to look out for.

Check for the following while looking the guitar over.

Small scratches or grazes shouldn't cause a problem but they should be reflected in the asking price of the guitar.

Make sure that there is no cracking present where the neck of the guitar joins the body and that the neck isn't warped or twisted.

Check the distance between strings and the last fret (nearest the body of the guitar). The strings should be as close as possible to the fret without actually touching it or causing the strings to "buzz" when played. The higher the strings from the fret the more pressure is needed by the fingers causing pain and soreness and making the sound distorted.

If all seems OK go ahead and make your purchase. If in doubt try to go back and look again with someone who is experienced with guitars.

The Wikipedia definition of piano is " a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard that produces sound by striking steel strings with felt hammers. The hammers immediately rebound allowing the strings to continue vibrating at their resonant frequency. These vibrations are transmitted through a bridge to a soundboard that amplifies them".

Ambrose Bierce describes it thus " a parlor utensil for subduing the impenitent visitor. It is operated by depressing the keys of the machine and the spirits of the audience".

Well that covers the technicalities and the humour, but nothing can come near to that feeling of being able to sit down at a keyboard and let the music flow. I had piano lessons at school, being taught by a very elderly nun who used to make me do finger exercises for ages at the table, before I was even let loose on the precious piano. I believed she then used to snooze through much of the latter part of my lesson, but that's another story.

I did love playing as a child. When a small piece came together, after weeks of bashing away at the keys, it was a joyous feeling. However, as with many other things when we are young, the time I devoted to my lessons became less and less as all the other parts of a typical teenager's life took over.

That is why at the grand old age of thirty-five I have returned to learning the piano and oh, how times and teaching have changed. I was kind of hesitant returning to notes and keys but it is a revelation to find out how teaching methods have moved on. I'm not saying that I am at expert level yet, but the wonderful feeling of being able to play for others and myself is indescribable.

With methods of teaching piano being as they are today I would say it really is possible to teach an old dog - well a 'latter youth' dog please - new tricks.

If you've been singing any length of time, you have probably heard the phrase "sing with your diaphragm" already. But what does this really mean? What is your diaphragm and how does it work? How does the diaphragm help with singing? Let's explore what the word "diaphragm" really means and how it is connected to good singing.

The Diaphragm Explained

The diaphragm is a system of muscles that is connected to the lowest ribs on the sides. It is also connected to the sternum and the back, top lumbar region. The diaphragm's primary function is to help you inhale. The diaphragm descends when you inhale, displacing the viscera, upper intestines and stomach.

Short-waisted people will notice that their epigastric area, or the area between the naval and sternum, bulges out when they inhale. Long-waisted people will show little bulging while inhaling because there's more room for expansion.

Exhaling

The diaphragm plays no role in actual exhalation, but does act as a controlling muscle system and controls how quickly you can exhale your breath. Exhalation is controlled by the abdominal system, which is located from your naval to your pelvis. When you exhale quickly, the diaphragm is basically inactive; however, when exhaling slowly, the diaphragm resists the natural exhaling action of the abdomen.

**EXPERIMENT: Try breathing out very slowly and you'll notice that for the first second or two, you are controlling the exhalation, but after that it happens without effort. Your diaphragm has taken action to ensure proper exhalation. Amazing, huh? When you breathe out quickly, you control the exhalation process. Try it both ways to feel the difference.

Singing and Exhalation

When singing, it's like you are breathing out these long, slow breaths throughout your song. You try to control them, but on long notes, the diaphragm will have to take over - it's only natural! All people have a strong diaphragm no matter what their size or height. The diaphragm doesn't need to be strengthened, but controlled. You must know how and when it works before you can control it.

Vocal Cords and the Diaphragm

Your vocal cords should not be used to hold back excessive pressure from breathing. Instead, they should only have enough breath pressure to help maintain their sound vibrations. If too much pressure falls on the vocal cords, they press together too tightly and cannot freely function as they should.

While singing, your epigastric area should not be sucked in, but should be in the position it is in when full of air after inhaling, immediately after the onset of a tone. This sounds opposite of what it should be, right? Think about it... if you take a good breath and then exhale most of it or all of it before singing the note, you're going to be "out of breath" too quickly because your diaphragm has already collapsed.

So, inhale a deep breath and be sure you are breathing in properly with your gut extending outward slightly, not your chest. Then begin to sing and allow the diaphragm to go to work. Using the diaphragm, you will notice you can hold the notes or sing longer phrases without breathing difficulties.

There are different shapes for you to choose from including round, flat back, oval, "vee" and asymmetrical where the neck is thinner either on the treble or bass side. Scale Length:

The scale length is the distance between the nut and bridge saddle. It is the vibrating length of the string. The longer the scale the more distance there is between the frets. The scale length chosen is important because it is what influences the tonal quality of the notes and the tension of the string when a note is played.

What scale length is best? Is it a short scale of 30 inches, medium scale of 32 inches, standard scale of 34 inches, 5 string long scale of 35 inches, or an extra long scale of 36 inches? Well it all depends on the instrument you're thinking of getting and the tone you desire. Let's say you're interested in getting a five string bass for example and want a defined low B string sound. In that case the longer the neck, the better. For a four string bass a shorter scale will do and it helps you get the most out of the G string. If you have small hands, a short scale bass is probably the best bass guitar for you.

Intonation:

Pay close attention to intonation. This is what determines whether the various notes on your bass play in tune. On some basses, the distance between the frets can be a little off and as a result these basses don't play in tune, usually when you pass the 12th fret. As far as I'm concerned these basses are useless and you shouldn't waste money on one.

Tuning machines:

In choosing the best bass guitar for you, you must pay attention to the type of tuning head your bass guitar has. This is what you use to fine tune your instrument and hold pitch. Ensure that you get the best one available. An enclosed machine heads are better than open tuning machines. They resists rust and airborne corrosives and you therefore don't have to maintain or replace them often.

Number of Frets:

The number of frets you choose is also a matter of personal preference. You can choose between 21, 22, or 24 frets. Personally, I do not worry about this too much since most playing takes place in the lower frets anyway.

Pickups:

When it comes to sound, pickups are perhaps just as important as the strings on your bass. No matter how good the wood of the bass is, if the pickups are lacking, it's pointless. But you need the right pickup for your bass since one pickup may work very well on one bass and not on another. You also need the right combination of strings and pickup. There are many pickup models available and they are either active or passive. If you choose one that is active, keep in mind that you will have to keep replacing batteries.

Bolt-on necks and neck-throughs:

In terms of neck, the best bass for you is all about your personal preference. If you want one that is stronger, has better sustain and note resolution, buy a neck-through bass. But for a punchier sound, nothings beats a bolt-on neck; the only limitation is that they are more prone to having dead spots.

Wood:

When buying the best bass guitar for you, choice of wood is important. The wood you choose will affect the tone and weight of the instrument. If you're gonna be standing up to play it's wise to have one that is lightweight. Swamp ash wood is a lightweight soft wood that produces low mids and a punchy tone. Alder is another lightweight wood except that the tone it produces is more crisp. Billy Sheehan (born on 1953 March 19 in Buffalo, NY) is an American bassist known for his work with Talas, Steve Vai, David Lee Roth, Mr Big, and Niacin.

Sheehan has won Guitar Player Magazine's "Best Rock Bass Player" readers' poll five times for his "lead bass" playing style. Guitar Player has likened his soloing on the four-string instrument to Eddie Van Halen's on the six-string guitar. Sheehan's repertoire includes the use of chording, two-handed tapping and controlled feedback. However, Sheehan is also noted as a steady "true" bassist, fulfilling the traditional supportive role of the electric bass in the rock idiom.

He has also been with the Church of Scientology for 35 years.

Equipment

Sheehan's main bass is a Yamaha Billy Sheehan Attitude 4 string bass with aftermarket blue LEDs and laser pointer, by Sims UK. He is a long time user of the Hipshot Bass D-tuner which allows him to drop the low E to a lower D on his bass' 4th string, all of his signature Yamaha basses have them factory installed. He also has a special deal with Yamaha that, as he puts it : "The basses in the store are the ones that i play, i don't get a custom shop version and a kid goes out with hard earned money and gets a plywood version." Sheehan is a long time Ampeg user, he has used Ampeg SVT-4Pro amplifiers for several years. Ampeg also makes his signature SVP-BSP pre-amps. A few more of his main rack units are: a no longer produced Pearce solid state dual channel pre-amp, he uses it to get distorted tones, as well as an Ashley dual channel compressor. He runs it all through two or four (depending on venue size) Ampeg 8x10 bass cabinets. He also has been known to occasionally use Hartke gear.

How to Tune a Bass Guitar

This material seeks to answer your question on how to tune a bass guitar. Well since I don't know exactly how many strings are on your bass guitar I shall present you with different options, namely, 4-string, 5 string, 6 string, and 7 string basses.

First of all we shall look at the standard tuning of bass guitars.

The standard tuning of a four string bass guitar from highest (thinnest string) to lowest (fattest string) is G-D-A-E.

On a five string bass the tunings are similar with the addition of a low B string.

On a six string bass guitar, a thinner (higher pitched) string is added, and is tuned to C. In other words on a 6 string bass guitar the settings are B-E-A-D-G-C, where B is the fattest string or lowest note and C the highest and thinnest.

On a 7-string bass a high F-string is added. The settings on a 7-string bass are B-E-A-D-G-C-F where B is the lowest and F the highest.

Tuning your bass is all about matching the pitch of your instrument to that of a bass guitar tuner, pitch pipe, tuning fork or a correctly tuned piano or keyboard. If you do not have a tuner or keyboard instrument, you can find an online tuner by doing a search.

Now all you have to do is match the pitch of the strings to the corresponding notes on your tuner. Hopefully your ears are sufficiently developed (musically), for you to hear this. When the note on your bass is the same as that of your tuner, the vibration patterns will match and you will hear no wah-wah-wah sound when you play the two notes. There will be no clash between the two notes.

So how do you tune your bass?

Loosen the string and tune up to the correct note. In other words your string should be well below the correct pitch and only then do you begin to tighten. That way you avoid breakage by tightening the string too much. Listen carefully to make sure the two pitches match and that there is no wah-wah-wah or clashing sound between the two notes.

As long as the notes are in sync, you will hear no wah-wah-wah sound. But if you pass the in tune point, you will begin to hear that undesired sound again, and it means that you will have to loosen on the string a little until you get back to the in tune point.

Tune all your strings one by one by matching the sound of the strings to the corresponding note on your tuner.

Tuning your bass is not hard. But as with any other instrument it involves practice. And of course, practice makes perfect. After a while you may find that you do not even have to rely on an electronic tuner to tune your bass. Hope you found this guide useful. Good luck.

Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea (born June 12, 1941) is a multiple Grammy Award winning American jazz pianist/keyboardist and composer.

He is arguably best known for his work during the 1970s in the genre of jazz fusion, although his contributions to straight-ahead jazz have been tremendous.
